Hootie and the Blowfish’s Darius Rucker had a fall at his South Carolina gig and narrowly avoided tumbling completely off the stage.
Darius, 58, was singing his solo 2008 hit Alright at his annual Riverfront Revival concerts in his hometown of Charleston when he fell forward, seemingly tripping as he sang out to the crowd.
Luckily, he was helped out by a staff member who pushed him back up, and he went on to continue the performance, joking: ‘I’m old as f***’.
Later on the singer addressed the tumble, as he told the crowd as per Daily Mail: ‘We’ve been doing this all summer. I hadn’t fell once. But I busted my a** in my hometown.’
Hootie and the Blowfish formed in South Carolina in 1986, and went on to make hits Let Her Cry, Hold My Hand, Only Wanna Be With You, and Rollin’.
The Grammy award-winning band have sold over 25million albums worldwide, and their debut, Cracked Rear View, is one of the top 10 best-selling studio albums of all time.
Going on to become a solo country music icon, Darius was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year.
The country music artist is heading to South Africa for gigs on October 19 and 26 in Pretoria and Cape Town.
Darius – who was arrested on drug charges in February – released his memoir Life’s Too Short earlier this year after his kids flew the nest, and he felt comfortable sharing some candid details about his life.
‘You don’t want your kids to be going to high school hearing, “I read your dad’s book,”’ he told People earlier this year of his kids Cary, 29, Dani, 23, and Jack, 19.
‘I knew I was going to tell the truth, and the truth [can] sometimes be out there. I just wanted them to be old enough to handle it,’ he said.
The singer opened up about how he went from singing Al Green during his childhood to his rockstar years with the band in the 90s, and going on to break into the country music scene as a Black artist.
He also wrote candidly about his absent father and the several complicated meetings they had over the years, including the time he requested his son give him $50,000.
Darius’ older brother Rucker was in and out of jail during his childhood with substance abuse problems. He later died after falling and hitting his head during a seizure when he was ‘f***ed up’.
‘I always said if I wrote the book, I was going to tell the truth. And I told the truth about him. That was another thing that you have to deal with, that trauma. Watching your older brother with all this potential turn into that was tough. It was traumatic,’ he told the publication.
The memoir also detailed Darius’ own issues with substance abuse as he admitted his surprise that all four of his bandmates – him, Dean Felber, Mark Bryan, and Jim Sonefeld – came out of the 90s in one piece.
He credited ex-wife Beth for saving his life by ‘putting her foot down’ with an ultimatum which turned out to be a ‘great moment’ in the star’s life.
