Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, has movingly revealed that he visits his late sister’s grave “pretty much every day”, 27 years after her tragic death.
The news was shared on Tuesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, where Charles recalled his frequent visits to Diana’s burial site at Althorp, the ancestral home of the Spencer family.
Charles has been the custodian of the estate since 1992, following the death of his father, John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer.
The former Princess of Wales is buried on a beautiful island in an ornamental lake within Althorp Park’s Pleasure Garden, a location only accessible by boat and off-limits to the public.
“Last week, one of her closest childhood friends came and was on the island. And that was so nice,” said Spencer, who is the 9th Earl Spencer.
When Diana passed away in August 1997, her only brother delivered her eulogy at her funeral the following month and continues to grieve her loss daily, nearly three decades later, reports the Mirror.
“I’m sure pretty much everyone watching this program has had trauma in their family at some point,” he said on Good Morning Britain. “And, like everyone else, you sort of get used to it without it ever going away.”
Prince Harry has opened up in his memoir ‘Spare’ about the challenges of visiting his mother’s secluded grave, revealing that a bridge once made it accessible to the public but was removed due to security concerns. “The bridge had been removed, to give my mother privacy, to keep intruders away,” he wrote.
He goes on to describe how deeply Princess Diana’s death affected him and recounts his emotional experience bringing Meghan Markle there in 2022 to mark the 25th anniversary of Diana’s passing. Recalling their visit, he describes how they rowed across to the island after a “little shove” from his uncle Charles Spencer, through stubborn mud.
“No visit to this place was ever easy, but this one… twenty-fifth anniversary,” reflects Prince Harry. “And Meg’s first time. At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mum.”
He speaks of laying flowers and seeking a moment of solace with his mother, while Meghan took her time to pay her respects.
“Feeling that Meg might also want a moment, I went around the hedge, scanned the pond. When I came back, Meg was kneeling, eyes shut, palms against the stone”, he shared, depicting a poignant scene at the graveside.
Prince Harry shared: “I asked, as we walked back to the boat, what she’d prayed for,” and added, “Clarity, she said. And guidance.”
