East Kilbride politicians have paid tribute to former First Minister Alex Salmond.

The former MP and MSP died suddenly on Saturday at the age of 69.

The Alba party leader became ill while attending an international conference in North Macedonia.

Local media reports said Mr Salmond collapsed during a lunch and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Alba party believe the cause of death to be a heart attack, according to the Press Association news agency.

Describing Mr Salmond as “a figure who inspired passionate debate”, East Kilbride Labour MP Joani Reid, a former intern in his parliamentary office, said: “His commitment to the cause he believed in was unwavering and he made an indelible mark on Scottish politics.

“As a student, I had the opportunity to intern in his parliamentary office, and it was an experience that shaped my understanding of public service.

“I will remember the personal kindness he showed to my family over the years.

“My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”

SNP MSP for East Kilbride Collette Stevenson posted on social media: “I’m so shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Alex Salmond. My heartfelt condolences go to his family at this very sad time.

“A huge figure in our Independence movement and a political giant who made a huge contribution to Scotland and her people.”

Central Scotland Labour MSP Monica Lennon said Mr Salmond was a “divisive” and “complicated” man but a “giant” in Scottish and UK politics.

She said: “The untimely death of former First Minister Alex Salmond has sent shockwaves around Scotland and beyond.

“My immediate thoughts and sympathies extend to his family and friends, particularly his wife Moira for her deeply personal loss.

“For many years, Alex Salmond was a giant in Scottish and UK politics. He was not without controversy and for many he will remain a divisive and complicated man.

“Regardless of views on his political beliefs and personal conduct, Scotland is united in respect for his family and his legacy will be remembered and debated for decades to come.”
