Two children have died along with three adults after a crash on the M6 in Cumbria.

The fatal smash happened on the M6 on the northbound carriageway past Tebay Services south of Penrith yesterday.

Two vehicles – a Skoda and a Toyota – crashed on the motorway at about 4.04pm.

The driver of the Toyota, a man, a woman and two children – all from Glasgow – were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third child travelling in the Toyota was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

The driver of the Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumbria Constabulary said: ‘The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers.’

The force is now appealing for information.

Footage shows smoke rising from the crash scene between junctions J36 and J39.

Motorists reported seeing an air ambulance land on the carriageway after traffic was stopped on the carriageway.

Weather at the time of the collision was overcast and footage appears to show fog on a nearby field.

The crash happened just hours before a yellow weather warning was forecast to bring heavy rain to parts of the North West.
