An expert dog trainer has shared three small dog breeds that are some of the best to have in a family home – and they all make for perfect pets.

“Number one, the Yorkie,” declared the expert on the American Standard Dog Training YouTube channel. “We’ve trained several of them through our programme and they’re very small, they’re very eager to learn and to train, and they love to cuddle on the couch.”

Yet, the dog trainer did note that Yorkshire Terriers can tend to be “barky”, meaning they may bark excessively, but with proper training, this behaviour can be rectified. The Kennel Club has indicated that these charming Yorkshire Terriers need roughly 30 minutes of exercise each day, reports the Express.

Owing to their compact size, Yorkies are particularly well-suited for those living in smaller abodes; however, they are equally cherished by those residing in more spacious homes. Delving into the next diminutive breed featured by the American Standard Dog Training firm, the specialist shared that the Pomeranian takes the second spot.

“Now, we’ve trained a couple [of Pomeranians] in our programme,” he mentioned. Reflecting on one of the latest Pomeranians to complete the company’s training program, the expert gleamed: “She loved to snuggle on the couch; loved to be carried; and we also trained her to be off leash.”

Pomeranians require an estimated 30 minutes of walk time per day as well, according to the Kennel Club. However, much depends on whether they are more inclined to lounge at home or enjoy extra strolls, which is contingent on their individual temperament and their walking habits in youth.

Revealing the third petite canine breed topping the recommendation list, the guru announced: “And number three, last but not least, is the mini Schnauzers.”

He stated: “They are very robust; they’re very tough for their small size; they can be easily managed or handled and, again, you can train them to a very high level.”

The American Kennel Club highlighted the mini Schnauzer as a low-shedding companion, branding it an “ideal family dog”.

Another chimed in with: “Schnauzer is my small dog favourite.”
