A builder who was severed in two by a forklift has shared devastating images of the moment the vehicle fell on him. Loren Schauers, now 23, lost three limbs and has had a difficult road to recovery after being crushed by the lifting machine in September 2019.

The labourer previously spoke about how, even though it has been years since the disaster, he was still experiencing phantom pain from missing limbs.

Loren took the daring choice to allow surgeons to undergo a hemicorporectomy, amputating everything below his waist, in order to preserve his life. He has since shared images of the devastating moment when the forklift nearly killed him, reports the Mirror.

Loren was dangerously close to the edge of a bridge owing to traffic, as seen by the photos. He was operating in the forklift when he dropped 50 feet, severing his arm and crushing his lower body.

“If you look closely in the second photo, you can see me still pinned under the forklift,” he said on Instagram. “Last photo is exactly what type it was, I’m sure of it.”

Loren, from Great Falls, Montana, has been documenting his rehabilitation in the years since. After the accident, he has adjusted excellently to his new life and reveals intimate aspects of his story through weekly vlogs on YouTube.

His loyal wife, Sabia Reiche, 23, who shares the account, has been by his side through all of his health issues and assists him with numerous everyday activities. Loren requires assistance changing his colostomy bags and bathing due to limited mobility.

Responding to personal queries about how the couple have sex on a Q&A, Loren’s wife Sabia said the question was ‘disrespectful’. “A question we get repeatedly is how do we have sex and how do we become intimate,” she said. “That is a very personal question that we are never going to answer or allude to as it’s very disrespectful.

“You wouldn’t ask a random couple on the street how they have sex and just because our life circumstances are different, it doesn’t give people the right to ask.”

Loren had told his family to keep him alive even if he was just a “head on a plate” following the accident. His family was faced with the heartbreaking option of whether to ask doctors to save him.

However, when the construction worker was able to talk for himself, he stared doctors “dead in the eye” and requested a life-saving operation. He has spent the last years living in Montana with his wife Sabia.
