The music world is still reeling from the tragic death of Liam Payne on Wednesday evening.

The singer is reported to have fallen from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires late last night. Since the news has broken, tributes have poured in for the former One Direction star.

As fans across the world mourn, the Daily Record is looking back to Payne’s first gigs in Scotland. In December 2010, Payne and his One Direction bandmates performed shows at two iconic Glasgow venues.

Fresh from their third-place finish in the seventh series of The X Factor, the group performed at Campus and The Garage. As reported by Glasgow Live, these shows marked the first time the band had played together outside of the singing competition.

The two Sauchiehall Street venues were unprepared for the chaos that Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan would bring with them to Scotland’s largest city. Despite only placing third, One Direction were the breakout act of their series of The X Factor.

With legions of fans lining up to see the boys perform, the two shows were unsurprisingly a busy affair. Playing in front of countless screaming fans, the group performed covers of hit songs such as Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Viva La Vida by Coldplay.

One video shared by a fan on YouTube also shows One Direction singing Rihanna’s 2010 single Only Girl (In the World). In the short clip, Payne can be seen on the righthand side of the stage performing underneath a Scottish flag.

Meanwhile, a photograph previously posted by the This Day in 1D History X account shows the five-piece during their performance at Campus. In the image, fans in the crowd can be seen holding up their BlackBerry phones and digital cameras.

One night later, One Direction would perform a similar set at The Garage. As reported by the Daily Record in 2015, Payne’s bandmates would later admit the Glasgow show was one of their favourites ever.

At the time, Styles commented: “We played a place in Glasgow once called The Garage. It was tiny. It was great.

“It was the first time and they had hoodies and hats and stuff and we were absolutely buzzing cause it was the first free stuff we got. I was like I’m going to wear this Garage shirt every single day for the rest of my life — and we did for a bit.”
