We are entering the midpoint of autumn in Scotland, which means the weather is starting to get chilly.

There is something about a fish supper when the temperature drops that is just magical. As the days get shorter and shorter, a good chippy is sure to lift your spirits.

Everybody has their own local favourite fish and chip shop, but some takeaways have earned acclaim that goes far beyond their regulars. One of these is the Quayside Restaurant and Fish Bar in the Aberdeenshire village of Gourdon.

The chippy has taken home numerous awards over the years in recognition of its food and service. These include a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, a National Fish and Chip Award, and a Food Award Scotland prize.

The restaurant serves up a large variety of chippy staples including fresh local haddock, wholetail Scottish breaded scampi, and breaded fish cakes — all of which come with a portion of chips and a choice of salad, beans, or peas. It also offers burgers, sausages, and other dishes such as ‘Gourdon skink’, halloumi fries, and haggis bonbons.

In addition to its core menu that changes seasonally, the Quayside also offers daily specials featuring “unbelievably fresh produce”. Consisting of whatever has been caught that day, you won’t know what dishes are available until you arrive — though you can be sure they will all be absolutely delicious.

Other than the delectable food itself, the Quayside also benefits from breathtaking views out across Gourdon’s harbour towards the North Sea. No matter what the weather is like when you visit, you will be treated to gorgeous vistas while you enjoy your meal.

If the rain is bucketing down and you don’t feel like getting drenched eating on the harbour wall, you can head inside and take a seat in the cosy restaurant space. Fitting up to 52 customers, the first-floor venue features sensational views out over the water.

The Quayside isn’t just popular amongst critics, it has also been acclaimed by customers. It currently has an average rating of 4.6 out of five on Google based on 841 reviews.

One satisfied visitor posted: “Fish was super fresh and tasty. Very very good.

“Added on the battered king prawns so a big plate but decent value. Nice selection of bottled local beers but you’re here for the fish n chips — great stuff.”

“What an absolute gem of a place.”
