Gender reveal events are all the rage these days for parents-to-be, with a host of creative methods used to announce to friends and family if they’re expecting a son or daughter.

Cakes, balloons, confetti, and scratch cards are just some of the quirky ways in which the surprise is revealed.

For one expectant mother, however, her gender reveal turned sour after a cake shop blunder spoiled the party. Sharing her disappointment on TikTok, she shared a voicemail from her local bakery that dashed her plans due to a shortage of blackberries.

“Listen to this voicemail I got from the bakery completely ruining my gender reveal,” the pregnant woman said in a video which has now amassed nearly eight million views after also being shared to X. In the message an employee of the bakery can be heard stating: “Please give me a call regarding your order. You ordered a single lemon with blackberry – we don’t have blackberry filling. The only thing that makes the lemon a single lemon is lemon curd,” inadvertently revealing that the couple are expecting a boy.

Adding further confusion, the bakery was seemingly fully aware of the cake’s significance, as they added in the voicemail: “You wanted a gender reveal so we need to talk about the cake. Give me a call.” The sound bite was captioned: “She had asked for blackberries for a boy and raspberries for a girl. The bakery had one job.”

It prompted one X user to slam the bakery business, who penned: “The lady could’ve easily asked ‘Am I speaking to one of the parents?'” Another agreed, adding: “Should’ve called and said hey there’s an issue with the requested berries.”

Meanwhile, a third was more pointed in their criticism: “They knew she was the one who placed the order and had in the notes don’t tell her what’s inside the cake. They didn’t need to call her in the first place as they were never even out of blackberries. Even if they were out, what was written in the order was to do a red fruit for a girl and a dark fruit for a boy. Blackberries/blueberries were only a suggestion. The employee just didn’t read the order properly whatsoever.”

In defence of the bakery, however, a commenter argued: “Anger is misplaced. Lady is doing her job. She probably assumed it was a friend or family member who placed the order. You need support from others to throw a gender reveal without a hitch. Someone else should’ve done the cake without parents involved. Mom shouldn’t be mad at the lady.”

Concurring with this view, someone else explained: “The baker was 100% looking at it from a baker’s perspective. She didn’t have the ingredient the client wanted and let them know. While it’s unfortunate and the mum is allowed to be upset, it was a simple mistake that should be forgiven.”

And a third person questioned the logic behind the mother’s actions, pondering: “Why would she leave her own number as the contact if she wanted to be surprised? What did she think was gonna happen?”
