When you think of rare coins, the Kew Gardens might be what springs to mind.

It’s incredibly hard to find with just 210,000 in circulation since being released back in 2009. But everyone knows finding one can mean hitting the jackpot.

Now it so happens there’s a new 50p coin that’s even more “rarer” than the Kew Gardens piece. According to TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, it’s even the most “sought-after” right now.

Posting with his 205,000 followers, he recently shed light on the Atlantic Salmon 50p which is now the scarcest in active circulation.

He said “With only 200,000 of these, this is an exciting day for coin collecting. It takes the crown from the all-mighty Kew Gardens 50p coin which held the title for the past 15 years.

“Launched at the tail end of 2023, the Atlantic Salmon 50p was released as part of the national celebrations for King Charles III’s Coronation year.

“This coin has now officially dethroned the Kew Gardens 50p, which had a mintage of 210,000 when it first came out in 2009.”

The enthusiast also mentioned how the Atlantic Salmon 50p is currently the top dog among 50p pieces in terms of demand.

He added: “The coin has already started to gain attraction on eBay and other coin groups. And the price is skyrocketing, so keep an eye out for the new rarest 50p you can find in your change.”

The expert’s insights quickly sparked a flurry of excitement, with his video racking up nearly 700 likes as followers eagerly hit the comments section.

One enthused collector remarked: “My daughter has two of these,” prompting the advice: “Excellent, keep them safe.”

Another couldn’t contain their eagerness, saying: “Really excited, can’t control myself here.” A third added: “So exciting, great video.”

If you’re in possession of the sought-after Atlantic Salmon 50p coin, it would be wise to consult an expert for appraisal. Meanwhile, eBay listings show that this rare find could fetch upwards of £50.
