Travel updates after drivers issued with thick fog warning through rush hour

All services between Peterborough or Cambridge and Ipswitch are being impacted because the broken down freight train has blocked some of the rail lines in the area.

Trains in this area could be cancelled or delayed by up to half an hour.

The disruption is set to last until 1.30pm.

Advance purchase ticket holders will be allowed to travel on earlier or later trains if their booked service is cancelled.

Worcestershire has been hit by flooding thanks to heavy rain overnight.

The A443 is closed between Abberley and Newnham Bridge due to flood water – and we recommend drivers don’t attend to force their cars through the flood water and repeat the disaster seen on the same road earlier this year.

There’s currently no service on the Woolwich Ferry crossing the Thames, due to the fog currently covering London.

Other London river buses are still running.

Meanwhile, the severe delays on the Hammersmith & City line are still ongoing, while delays on the Northern line have been downgraded to minor delays.

The A27 has been closed in both direction between Falmer and the A23 after a serious collision.

All emergency services are on the scene and Highways England warn the road could be closed well into the afternoon.

The sea has flooded the railway between Dovey Junction and Aberystwyth, affecting Transport for Wales routes between Birmingham International or Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth.

All lines between those stations have been forced to close.

Service between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth has been suspended, and disruption is expected until 1pm.

A signal fault near Tring is causing disruption to trains running between Euston and Milton Keynes Central.

Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes, or revised.

It’s affecting all Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services which run between the two stations.

Earlier this morning we mentioned there had been a signal fault in the Carstairs area, blocking lines running between Carlisle and Glasgow Central or Edinburgh.

This incident has now been upgraded to major disruption, as delays could last up to 90 minutes and the disruption is set to last until midday.

To recap, the delays are affecting these routes:

• between London Euston / Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
• between Wolverhampton and Glasgow Central
• between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
• between Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central

• LNER between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh
• Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
• ScotRail between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh
• TransPennine Express between Manchester Piccadilly and Newcastle and also between Preston and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh (once lines have reopened)

You can use your ticket on the following services at no extra cost:

• CrossCountry between York / Newcastle and Edinburgh
• Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
• ScotRail between Glasgow stations and Edinburgh
• TransPennine Express between Manchester Airport and York

If you are travelling and arrive late at your destination due to a cancelled or delayed service, you may be able to claim compensation. You will need to request compensation directly from your train company.

Compensation will depend on:

• Which train company you travelled with – different companies have different schemes, but they all offer compensation
• The type of ticket you have – for example, compensation for a single Day ticket is calculated differently than that for a 7-Day Season ticket
• The length of the delay in arriving at your destination – each train company has its own compensation threshold, which will be detailed in their Passenger’s Charter on their website

Claims can be made online, or by post using a form that you can download from a train company website or get from a staffed station.

Some train companies allow customers to register certain kinds of tickets online to make future claims quicker and easier.

Overall the Tube is running pretty well this morning, but there are currently severe delays on the Northern line.

This has been caused by a signal failure at Morden.

Meanwhile the Hammersmith & City line has severe delays due to train cancellations.

Chester circular services on Merseyrail have been affected by heavy rain flooding the line at Hooton.

Trains will be revised to run between Liverpool and Hooton only, and disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Rail replacement transport is operating between Hooton and Chester to help with your journey.

Ticket acceptance is currently in place with Transport for Wales between Liverpool and Chester.

There’s a signalling problem in the Carstairs area which has blocked all lines, affecting several services between Scotland and London.

Trains could be cancelled or delayed by up to around half an hour, and the disruption is set to last well into the morning.

It’s affecting the following routes:

• between London Euston / Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
• between Wolverhampton and Glasgow Central
• between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
• between Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central

A shortage of signalling staff means all lines between these two stations are blocked and trains can’t run between them.

These services are affected:

• between Carmarthen and Bristol Parkway / London Paddington
• between Fishguard Harbour / Milford Haven / Pembroke Dock / Carmarthen / Swansea and Cardiff Central
• between Milford Haven and Manchester Piccadilly
• between Pembroke Dock and Swansea
• between Carmarthen and Crewe

There’s a signal fault at Earlestown which looks likely to cause delays to Northern and Transport for Wales services until around 4pm.

It’s affecting the following routes:

• between Leeds / Manchester Victoria and Chester
• between Manchester Airport and Chester / Llandudno / Holyhead

The route between Manchester and Liverpool via St Helens Junction / Warrington Central is unaffected. Ticket restrictions have been lifted for you to use an alternative Northern service to help with your journey.

Rail replacement buses have been provided between Manchester Victoria and Warrington Bank Quay in both directions.

Journey times will be extended by 60 minutes while travelling by rail replacement transport.

Alternatively, you may use your ticket on these operators:

• services between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly to connect with a Northern service between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester, and between Manchester Stations and Eccles
• between Warrington Bank Quay / Liverpool Lime Street and Chester
• between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street

Services will run only between Holyhead / Llandudno and Warrington Bank Quay.

Replacement road transport has been sourced with Keanes Coaches between Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester Piccadilly in both directions.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost with Northern between Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester via any reasonable route.

The following advice will help you stay safe when driving in fog:

• Use dipped headlights, wipers and demisters. Avoid using full beam, as the fog reflects the light back, reducing visibility even further.
• According to the Highway Code, you should use your headlights when visibility is below 100 metres (328 feet).
• Use fog lights only when visibility is seriously reduced and below 100 metres (328 feet).
• Beware of other drivers not using headlights.
• If you really can’t see, consider stopping until it’s safe to continue.

Only drive as fast as conditions allow:

• Create a bigger gap between you and the vehicle in front of you
• Slow down so you can stop within the distance you can see clearly.
• Check your mirrors before you slow down, brake slowly

Note: occasionally while driving, your visibility may be affected by smoke or dust. In these situations, you should follow the same advice as for driving in fog.

The Met Office has put two weather warnings in place this morning, both in place until 9am.

If you’re travelling anywhere covered by these warnings today, take care on the roads, and keep an eye out for potential disruption to public transport.

If you would usually board your train at Highbury & Islington, you may use your Great Northern ticket at London Kings Cross, Moorgate, Old Street, Essex Road, Drayton Park or Finsbury Park stations instead.

You may also use your ticket at no extra cost on:

• L which call at alternative stations, such as Holloway Road or Caledonian Road on the Piccadilly Line, as well as those on any other reasonable route
•  across the local area

If you would usually change between the Victoria Line and Great Northern services at Highbury & Islington, please consider doing this at Finsbury Park instead. Finsbury Park station is expected to be busier than usual.

We recommend you leave at least 20 minutes of extra time if your journey is affected.

Great Northern services running through Highbury & Islington this morning are being revised due to a fault with an escalator at the station.

Trains will call at this station for customers to disembark only. Trains will not call at this station to pick up customers.

Passengers won’t be able to board Great Northern services here between 7-10am, and the platforms will be exit only.

It’s also thought some Victoria line trains could be affected by this.

• Between Balloch and Airdrie
• Between Helensburgh Central / Milngavie and Bathgate
• Between Helensburgh Central and Edinburgh
• Between Milngavie / Springburn and Airdrie

Services operating from Partick towards Glasgow Central Low Level / Glasgow Queen St Low Level will be delayed and may be revised.

Services between Milngavie and Springburn are suspended in both directions.

A shuttle bus, operated by Photoflash, will run between Springburn and Bellgrove from approximately 6.30am

You may use your ticket on Glasgow City buses on route 15 between Milngavie and Glasgow Queen Street.

Customers may use their tickets between Balloch and Airdrie for stations to Bellgrove.

If you have had to drive to another station your ticket will be valid to collect your car on your return journey. Speak to a member of staff to validate your ticket.
