BALTIMORE, Md. (Gray News) – An African elephant at the Maryland Zoo was euthanized Tuesday after a fall.

At 49 years old, Anna was the zoo’s oldest elephant and had known medical issues, so zoo staff decided euthanasia was in the animal’s best interest.

According to the Maryland Zoo, Anna lived well beyond the life expectancy for her species, which is 38 years for female African elephants.

“She had a close relationship with her keepers and excelled at training, voluntarily participating in her medical care as she aged,” zoo officials said in a press release.

Anna arrived at the Maryland Zoo in July of 1983.
