Since its inception in 1997, Midsomer Murders has captivated audiences. Now available on popular streaming platforms, the show has garnered a global following.

The series has seen two DCI Barnabys leading the charge throughout its impressive 27-year run.

John Nettles was the original face of the franchise, playing the role from the very first episode until his character opted for retirement in 2011. Neil Dudgeon then stepped into the shoes of DCI John Barnaby, Tom’s cousin, taking over as the lead detective.

In recent months, the internet has been buzzing with speculation that Neil might be stepping down after 13 years, with rumours suggesting a new actor could take on the iconic role.

Sportscasting.com reports that David Tennant, famed for his role in Doctor Who is currently the frontrunner to become the next DCI Barnaby, with odds standing at 4/1, reports the Express.

Hot on his trail are The Office’s Martin Freeman at 6/1 and the recently departed Death in Paradise star Ralf Little at 7/1.

Commenting on the potential change in Midsomer’s detective lineup, Sportscasting spokesman Andy Newton remarked: “The next DCI Barnaby odds are a tight affair with many big names being thrown around including former Dr Who David Tennant, who would certainly be a big enough star to fill.

“Trying to solve a murder in Midsomer has been a tricky business since 1997, and trying to work out who will be the next DCI Barnaby looks equally as hard if the betting is to be believed.”

“Former Dr Who David Tennant would be a big catch for the show, and it’s no shock to see him as a favourite, while the three Martins – Clunes, Freeman, and Compston are all popular in the betting too.

He continued: “However, at 8/1, there could be some value in Midsomer Murder execs turning to a familiar face in Jason Hughes, who played Barnaby’s sidekick Jones between series 11-15.”

“Or could former Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst ‘trot’ into Midsomer? DCI ‘Dave’ Barnaby has a certain ring to it!”

Despite having no plans of stepping away from his role, in a recent interview, Neil Dudgeon opened up about being “cancelled” after he replaced John as the lead detective. He confessed to Radio Times: “If they’d cancelled me after one series, that would have been embarrassing! It gets easier, but I try to keep it fresh. Even if I’ve gone through the script 50 times, I’ll look at it again and have another thought.”

“I still find the job exceptionally enjoyable and am profoundly thankful for it.”

Midsomer Murders is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
