A Scots killer who mowed down a pensioner and claimed his girlfriend was driving passed away from leukemia, a fatal accident inquiry has heard.
HMP Glenochil prisoner Gregg Anderson, 31, died on Boxing Day 2021 in hospital after being jailed in 2018 for killing 68-year-old Linda Dunn at a retail park in Leven, Fife,
A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) determined that Anderson’s cause of death was leukemia. He was first diagnosed in January, 2021, but was given a poor prognosis and admitted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.
Anderson received a bone marrow transplant on October 25 of 2021 but became very unwell afterwards. Over the next two months his health rapidly deteriorated and after numerous complications he died in hospital on December 26.
The FAI heard that Anderson’s family described his treatment as ‘barbaric’ as he neared the end of his life and complained to Natalie Beal, the governor of HMP Glenochil, that he was held in handcuffs until the day before his death. They also alleged that they were unable to bring in an iPad into hospital or take photographs.
However, Sheriff David Taylor referred to a statement provided by Anderson’s dad that contradicted their claims about when the handcuffs were removed. However, he confirmed that the prison custody firm GeoAmey has since reviewed their procedures and rules for prisoners in end of life situations can be relaxed to allow privileges which they would not otherwise be entitled to receive.
Anderson, from East Wemyss, Fife had been behind the wheel of a white Mazda motor when it crashed into Linda on October 29, 2017.
Emergency services raced to the scene but she was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.
Anderson’s girlfriend, Tiegan Carruthers, initially claimed she had been driving the car and was witnessed screaming, crying and saying she was “going to jail” moments after the crash.
He initially told police that his partner was unable to open her door after the crash so he had climbed over and done it for her before exiting the vehicle.
However, an eyewitness later came forward and told police that a man had been driving the car with a female passenger immediately before the smash.
Anderson later admitted that he caused the pensioner’s death by driving dangerously at excessive speed and failing to observe a pedestrian crossing.
He also accepted driving without insurance or a licence and attempting to defeat the ends of justice by providing false information that his girlfriend was the driver to avoid being caught.
Former dental nurse Carruthers narrowly escaped being jailed due to her young age, then 19, and was ordered to perform 225 hours of unpaid work.
