A dog from London has been named as the happiest pet in the UK and the second happiest in the world.

Fred, the therapy dog, spends his working day making people at Imperial College Healthcare feel all jolly and nice.

He started work at St Marys Hospital in Paddington in December and has been a joy to be around ever since.

He had some stiff competition from the other 4,000 pets that entered but was recognised for his dedication to spreading happiness.

Angela Laws, from TrustedHousesitters, that ran the competition and panel judge said: ‘We’re absolutely thrilled to recognise Fred on the world stage.

‘It just goes to show that when it comes to spreading joy, UK pets are top-notch. Fred’s story is a wonderful reminder of the incredible impact animals have on our lives, especially in times of need.’

Pictures taken of Fred added to Instagram show him appearing to smile, making the cute dog even more adorable.

There has been quite the reaction to him across the social media platform as well.

This includes nataliem31 who wrote: ‘So if we can just arrange a pat when I come for my neurosurgery outpatient appointment in January.’

Stan_moore_ commented: ‘Hi Fred!’

It is the first time the competition to name the world’s happiest pet has been run – meaning it is even more special for him.

Fred was beaten to the top spot by Supai the dog, from Doylestown, in Pennsylvania.

She was found in 2014 suffering from malnourishment and dehydration after she was found in a canyon.

Supai was found by Torey Mill, who followed her through the Grand Canyon and their friendship blossomed.

She said: ‘With a decade of shared memories across diverse landscapes, Supai isn’t just living her best life – she’s teaching me how to live mine.’

After Fred and Supai won the top spot, they’ve both won prizes for their efforts in making people happy.

This includes a dream holiday with £5,000 in travel vouchers, as well as a free TrustedHousesitters membership and a year’s supply of pet food.
