If you’re on the hunt for a scrumptious dinner recipe to whip up this weekend, burgers are always a top choice – they feel like a proper indulgence even though they’re so easy to make.

One version that’s been getting loads of love lately is the smash burger, which is a super-thin patty paired with cheese and other fillings to create the ultimate feast.

According to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, they couldn’t be easier to rustle up at home, and you only need a few ingredients to get started.

His recipe is showcased in his new book Simply Jamie, which is all about easy-to-make dishes that can be knocked together quickly using pantry staples.

And this one is certainly no exception, as it can be ready and on your plate in just 12 minutes, reports the Express.

Posted on the Happy Foodie website, this recipe comes together in a flash, and you only need six ingredients.

It’s described as the ‘ultimate late-night treat dinner for one’, topped with fried onions, melted cheese and your pick of ketchup and mustard.

Here’s everything you need to get cracking on the main event.

Ingredients

  • 125g beef mince
  • 1/4 of a small onion
  • One tsp Cajun seasoning
  • One burger bun
  • Two gherkins
  • Handful of mixed salad leaves
  • Olive oil
  • Ketchup and mustard to serve (optional)

Method

Peel the onion, slice it very finely into rounds, then break into rings and cook in a large non-stick frying pan with one tablespoon of olive oil for a few minutes, stirring regularly, then push to one side of the pan.

Mould the minced meat into a rough pattie about 12cm thick and slightly larger than your bun, then place it in the pan. Season with black pepper and Cajun seasoning, then move the onion rings on top and use a fish slice to firmly press the onions into the meat.

Fry for two minutes on each side, or until it’s well-cooked and has a gnarly appearance, while also toasting the halved bun for a minute.

Spread the bottom half of the bun with ketchup, place the burger on top, slice and layer over one gherkin, squeeze over mustard to your preference, and pop the lid on.

Slice the tomato and remaining gherkin to serve on the side with the salad leaves, or you can choose to serve it in the bun as well.
