Morning Live host Helen Skelton couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at her co-presenter Gethin Jones over his fashion choices on BBC Breakfast.

Helen and Gethin were back on our screens on Monday morning (October 21), gearing up for the latest instalment of their popular daytime programme. Ahead of the show’s 9:30am start, BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were eager to find out what the Morning Live team had in store for viewers.

In a preview of the day’s content, Helen revealed that they would be chatting with gardener Mark Lane about how to protect your plants during the colder months using clothing. Mark, appearing on set with a sweater in hand, advised: “Pull out your old pullovers, jumpers and jackets because we’ll be using those to keep your greeny alive.”

When the focus returned to the presenting duo, Gethin humorously referred to the garment Mark was holding and quipped: “Why do they always go into my room to get..”

Seizing the opportunity, Helen playfully mocked her co-host’s wardrobe by retorting: “Because they’re old and tatty and need a new lease of life,” reports Wales Online.

Gethin took the jibe in stride, conceding with a good-natured: “That’s fair,” before moving on to tease more of the upcoming segments, including: “Straight from the Strictly ballroom, nothing tatty about this one Anton Du Beke gives us the lowdown on last night’s elimination.”

An awkward exchange unfolded on live television last month between Helen and Gethin. The incident happened as they concluded a segment on disputing council tax with consumer journalist Felicity Hannah. As they wrapped up the section, Gethin referenced Bryan Adams’ hit song, saying: “Everything I do, I do it for you.”

However, Helen misinterpreted his comment, thinking he was addressing Felicity, and responded: “You made Felicity really uncomfortable then. She didn’t know where you were going with that.”

Gethin clarified: “I was looking at you. That was the awkward bit.” Helen jokingly retorted: “More so now though, eh? ” and playfully shifted her chair away from him.

The confusion arose when Felicity mentioned that to comprehend council tax, one had to recall 1991, noting that Bryan Adams’ song “Bryan Adams was in the charts with Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” was a chart-topper at the time, which Gethin praised as a “good reference”.

BBC Breakfast airs everyday from 6am on BBC One and Morning Live at 9.30am
