Stephen Robinson insists it will be back to basics for St Mirren after their Hearts horror show.

The furious Buddies boss branded his side’s performance unacceptable and said they were architects of their own downfall.

A 4-0 Premiership loss at Tynecastle was Saints’ heaviest defeat since they lost by the same scoreline to Dundee at Dens Park in November 2023.

Goals from Kenneth Vargas, Daniel Oyegoke, James Wilson and Blair Spittal earned Neil Critchley a debut victory as Jambos gaffer.

The Paisley outfit ended the weekend in eighth place following wins for Dundee and Kilmarnock over Motherwell and Rangers, respectively.

Robinson also took responsibility for the Buddies’ capital calamity – but vowed that there will be a response.

“The performance level wasn’t acceptable at all,” he said afterwards.

“Hearts didn’t need a new manager bounce. They didn’t need to play particularly well to beat us. We beat ourselves.

“For the first goal, we lost the ball and didn’t react. The second is a great goal but we ran into each other for the third then for the fourth, we we gave the ball away again.

“Ultimately, I put the team out and I’m to blame but some of the decision-making wasn’t acceptable.

“Senior players have made decisions that aren’t good enough and we need a response to that. Otherwise, this will be a long season.

“The players have been told in no uncertain terms that isn’t good enough.”

When asked if this should be a wake-up call, Robbo replied: “It should have been a wake-up call three or four weeks ago – but this is a proper one. Everyone, including myself, has to step up.”

And when asked what the plan for this week is to get back on track, with a trip to face Rangers at Ibrox on the horizon, the manager’s message was clear. He simply said: “Go back to basics.”
