Forty groups across North Lanarkshire are picking up lottery grants totalling nearly £1.3 million.

Many of these projects will deliver activities that enhance the local environment for future generations – one of the National Lottery Community Fund’s key missions.

Environmental charity St Patrick’s Furniture Project Ltd in Shotts helps combat both the climate crisis and the rising cost of living by collecting and delivering recycled and refurbished furniture, helping families to access goods at low cost and diverting it from landfill.

They are celebrating an award of £19,500 to buy a new van, which they will use to transport furniture.

Locals Stuart and Michelle Noon, from Carluke, said: “We enjoy visiting St Patrick’s Furniture Project because the staff and volunteers are so helpful and friendly.

“We’ve picked up lots of bargains for ourselves and our grandchildren.”

Project administrator Gerry Murphy said: “Without this funding the project would have found it very difficult to find money to replace our previous van.

“Many thanks to the lottery and everyone that plays the lottery who help fund projects like this”.

Announcing the £19.3 million package of grants, Kate Still, Scotland chair of The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “This November, the National Lottery celebrates its 30th birthday.

“For three decades, communities have come together, supporting one another and transforming lives through National Lottery funding – a truly inspiring achievement.

“National Lottery players can take pride in knowing that their contributions are supporting groups like St Patrick’s Furniture Project.”

National Lottery players raise over £30 million a week for good causes across the UK.

Thanks to them, last year The National Lottery Community Fund awarded over half a billion pounds (£686.3 million) of life-changing funding to communities across the UK, supporting over 13,700 projects to turn their great ideas into reality.
