CHARLESTON, S.C. – (Gray News) – A Coast Guard crew in South Carolina rescued a 33-year-old man who was struck by his boat’s propeller as he attempted to ground the vessel Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston said they received a notification just before 2 p.m. from Chatham County Marine Patrol officers who were requesting air support to help get the man to safety.

The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew helped take the man to Savannah Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Lt. Hunter Shortly with Air Station Savannah said the mission’s urgency was a good example of how the team worked together in a time of need.

“Every member knew their roles and was able to perform above and beyond to facilitate a lifesaving medevac,” he said. “I am extremely proud and grateful for all the hard work that came from Air Station Savannah.”

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.

Crews also worked to clear the vessel.

The condition of the victim was not revealed.
