GREENSBORO, N.C. (WXII) – A North Carolina family is demanding justice after a groom was fatally shot in front of his new bride and one of his daughters in the hours following his wedding.

Tyrek Burton, 37, was married for about seven hours before a day filled with happiness and joy took an unimaginable turn. Police say the shooting that claimed the father of four’s life may have been related to road rage.

“Supposed to be one of the happiest moments of his life, and it turned into something tragic,” said Tyrek Burton’s sister, Brittany Burton.

Family members called police shortly after the Oct. 12 wedding reception wrapped up at the Barber Park Event Center in Greensboro. They say someone they didn’t know entered the park, alleging that Tyrek Burton was involved in a traffic incident.

Moments later, the groom was shot in front of his new bride and several others, including one of his daughters.

“I don’t understand how somebody that don’t know somebody from a can of paint can just come in and just do that. I don’t, and I never will,” Brittany Burton said.

Tyrek Burton’s family is now hoping the person who claimed the life of a husband, father and friend on his wedding day is held responsible.

“I demand justice. I demand it, and I don’t want to wait years for it. He don’t deserve what he got. He waited 13 years to get his bride. As soon as he get his bride, he couldn’t even take her home. It’s just not fair,” said his mother, Carolyn Burton.

Loved ones set up a GoFundMe for Tyrek Burton’s family. They say the proceeds will be going to help his wife and four daughters.

As of last Tuesday, police had not released any details about a suspect(s).
