You never know what you’re going to find when you visit Aldi. Sure, you can expect all the usual grocery fare, but more often than not, you’ll take home something you never even knew you needed.

Usually this will be something from the middle aisle, but shoppers visiting ahead of December 25 will likely notice something rather unexpected in the Christmas section.

That’s because the budget supermarket has unveiled a brand new chocolate product, known as a ‘Chreaster egg’.

The sweet treat is exactly what it sounds like — a Christmas Easter egg. Yep, Aldi has given the classic Easter egg a festive makeover and it’s bound to cause a stir.

The Dairyfine Hollow Character eggs cost £1.99 and are available in two options: Garry the Gingerbread Man or Parker the Penguin.

The retailer claims the chocolate eggs make the perfect stocking filler for Christmas and are also a great conversation starter — and they’re not wrong as they’ve already garnered attention online.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) @upton_le shared a snap of the Chreaster eggs in their local supermarket, writing: ‘Merry Chreaster ya filthy animal.’

Hundreds of people liked the post, with dozens responding to share their thoughts. Even the official Aldi account got involved, joking: ‘Babe what’s wrong, you’ve hardly touched your Chreaster egg.’

@JAU_4 found the whole thing hilarious, saying: ‘I love Aldi, just when you think they can’t do better. This is so cursed I actually love it.’

@Ever_The_Emo was a fan of the new item, claiming they’d ‘take them all thank you’, while @FergusOKeefe thought eggs for Christmas made sense, although he wasn’t keen on the name.

He said: ‘Chreaster. CHREASTER?! Don’t you dare you lovely people. Tbf, I’ve always thought it should be eggs at Christmas because we’re (some of us still) celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus.’

But others weren’t quite so into the idea, as @ClareRhian posted: ‘This is just to save the embarrassment of having Easter eggs on the shelves on Boxing Day isn’t it?!’ And @andy_8784 agreed, commenting: ‘Disguising Easter Eggs at Christmas so it won’t look suspicious. Agent Aldi.’

Emma Harrison wasn’t happy about the shape, saying: ‘Eggs! Just no, Aldi. We all know that Christmas chocolate is either sphere, triangular, circular, or hexagon shaped. The most exotic shape allowed is Quality Street’s Purple One!’

While @Lalwendeboggart wasn’t sure about the name of one of the Chreaster egg characters, sharing: ‘I like how you’re trying to make the name Gary cute again. Is he secretly carrying a can of ale in his belly though?’

A few people also didn’t understand why Aldi hadn’t included Halloween in the mix, with ‘Chreasterween eggs’ to celebrate the spooky fun of October 31 as well.

Aldi, of course had an asnwer for this, replying: ‘Wow, now… We can’t go full throttle right off the mark! We thought we would ease our customers in with the Chreaster Eggs first! Final destination: Easummalloweenmas eggs!’

Speaking about the launch of the new festive product, Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, added: ‘At Aldi we’re always looking for fun and creative wasy to enhance our Christmas range. The “Chreaster Egg” trend has really taken off because it blends Easter’s most popular treat, the Easter Egg, with the beloved season of Christmas.

‘Whether it’s a stocking filler or a conversation starter, we hope shoppers love our charming Dairyfine Hollow Character Eggs.’

In other Aldi news, the retailer was recently found to have the best supermarket baked beans, with a 41p Bramwells tin coming out on top in a taste test, and even beating Heinz.

And Aldi’s best-selling heated airers are also back in stock, with the £34.99 product being hailed a game-changer as it helps people get their clothes dry in the cold winter months.
