Alex Salmond will be laid to rest at a private family funeral on October 29th, it has been reported. The burial will take place in Strichen, Aberdeenshire, the village where he lived with his wife Moira.

The former SNP First Minister died suddenly in North Macedonia earlier this month after speaking at an event. His death from a heart attack stunned Scotland and his body was flown back to Aberdeen after billionaire Sir Tom Hunter paid to charter a plane.

The funeral will be followed by a more public celebration which will be staged at a later date.

The Sunday Mail reported at the weekend that Salmond’s successor, Nicola Sturgeon, would be banned from both events. The pair fell out spectacularly over the Sturgeon Government’s investigation into claims of sexual harassment against Salmond.

The probe was declared unlawful by a judge and the pair did not speak again The former SNP leader, who led the Scottish Government from 2007 until 2014, was 69 when he died.
