Sir Chris Hoy should be commemorated at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Ian Murray has said. The Scottish Secretary said there should be “a fitting tribute” to the six-time Olympic champion at the Games in two years’ time.

Hoy announced at the weekend that his cancer diagnosis is terminal and has two to four years left to live. Murray was speaking in Glasgow as the city was confirmed as the host for the scaled-back 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the east end of the city is one of the venues which will be used.

When asked if he would like to see Hoy commemorated in the Games, Murray replied: “Yeah, I would think so. Given that he’s such a decorated Olympian and sportsperson.”

He continued: “It will be a very important time… which is again why I think it’s great that it’s coming to Glasgow, because you would be able to do some of these events alongside it as well as to celebrate our sporting success of the past.

When asked if he would back a Sir Chris Hoy games, Murray replied: “That’s a question for the organising committee, I’m afraid… But I’m sure there will be, quite rightly, a fitting tribute to Sir Chris Hoy not just at the Commonwealth Games, but at other sporting events which are held in Glasgow and Scotland.”
