A talented young East Kilbride professional was welcomed to Parliament by the town’s MP Joani Reid following his performance at the prestigious WorldSkills competition.
Representing the UK, Nathan Young, a former pupil from Duncanrig Secondary School, travelled to Lyon to compete in the field of mechanical engineering CAD (Computer-Aided Design), earning a Medallion for Excellence for his talent and hard work.
Nathan was part of Team UK, which consisted of 31 young professionals from across the four nations. Team UK delivered an impressive top ten finish at the global event, securing two silver medals, two bronze medals and medallions for excellence in 12 skills.
WorldSkills Competitions are the gold standard of skills excellence, inspiring young competitors to turn their passion into a profession.
The 47th WorldSkills Competition took place in Lyon on September 10-15, following the postponement of the 46th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, by one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Commenting on Nathan’s success, Joani Reid, Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven said that this achievement underlines the UK’s position as a world-class place to invest, develop talent, and create jobs.
“Nathan’s achievement is not only a testament to his individual dedication and skill but also highlights the importance of investing in further education, apprenticeships, and skills training”, said Ms Reid.
“His success shows what our young people can achieve when given the opportunity to develop their talents. We need to ensure that the further education sector receives the support it needs to nurture talent and provide more young people with the chance to thrive in their chosen fields.”
