Recurring vandalism at bus stops in and around Castle Douglas is leaving passengers without visible timetables to check bus times.

The busy transport exchange outside the town’s swimming pool has been a particular target of mindless attacks for at least two years.

Now local councillor Pauline Drysdale is pressing for a solution after being alerted to the ongoing problem by local resident Max Pohlendt, a regular bus user.

According to Mr Pohlendt, timetables at the pool stop have been removed completely and the interior defaced.

Councillor Drysdale has contacted the council and SWestrans to ask what, if anything, could be done to improve the condition of the bus stops and to reintroduce timetables.

She said: “I have duly reported the missing panel to Swestrans and on the council website in the hope that it can be replaced.

“But I would respectfully ask that those vandalising the bus stops and removing bus timetables take a minute to think about the repercussions of their actions upon those more vulnerable persons who require to utilise bus transport and perhaps do not have internet access.”

Mr Pohlendt said: “I am a regular user of local bus services and I am disappointed that the bus stop at Castle Douglas Swimming Pool is being repeatedly vandalised and timetables removed.

“I have a smartphone to check bus times online, but not everyone does, especially older people.

“This kind of vandalism and antisocial behaviour is not good for our community.

“I do think we need to find some way of addressing it otherwise it makes things worse for everyone in the town.”

Councillor Drysdale understands that the yearly maintenance programme it is not directly under the remit of the council.

In a response to the Castle Douglas and Crocketford member, SWestrans piblic officer Linda Richardson outlined action being taken.

She said: “Our bus shelter contract will be renewed at the end of the year.

“As part of the tender the following criteria is being asked – bus shelter installation, similar to what we have now, hard standing areas and associated works, and maintenance including cleaning, replacing perspex and small repairs.

“Once the above is in place we will try and get a contracting firm on to this as we would agree that they are indeed in need of a specialist clean.”

Ms Richardson added: “Should passengers wish certain services SWestrans can be contacted for paper copies.

“But due to the network review and tender extensions it is not feasible to create a timetable booklet at present as it would be may be out of date in a few months.

“All up to date timetables can be found at Get bus and ferry timetables from Dumfries and Galloway Council at dumgal.gov.uk although many people may not have the internet, which in itself causes issues.”
