A hillwalker was airlifted from a Scots mountain after they suffered a horror fall.

Rescuers were called out to Cul Mor in Sutherland, in the North West Highlands after a person was knocked off their balance during a strong gust of wind on Monday. Assynt Mountain Rescue Team raced to the casualty who had plummeted down steep, loose ground close to the mountain’s summit.

A Coastguard Rescue helicopter was scrambled to the scene after it was feared the climber had suffered serious injuries. The casualty was whisked off the mountain, with the rest of their group escorted back to their vehicles by the rescue crew.

Dramatic pictures shared on the Assynt Mountain Rescue Team’s Facebook showed the horrendous conditions that the team faced, with the search party working in total darkness.

A post from Assynt Mountain Rescue Team read: “Assynt Mountain Rescue Team were called out yesterday afternoon to attend a fallen hill walker on the popular mountain of Cul Mor.

” The injured party had been unbalanced by a strong gust of wind and had tumbled down steep, loose ground close to the mountain’s summit. Due to the potentially serious nature of the injuries sustained, we immediately requested air support, and the crew of HM Coastguard Rescue 151 were tasked to respond.

“Fortunately, the cloud base remained high enough for the coastguard helicopter to safely access the casualty’s location and they were airlifted onward to definitive care.

“A group of our volunteers then walked in to meet with the remaining members of the casualty’s hill party and escort them safely back to their vehicles.

“Top tip: Follow the example of this group of experienced hill walkers and if you need our help, dial 999, ask for Police and then ask for Mountain Rescue.”
