A man has died after a “serious incident” at a sand mine in the west coast. Emergency services were called to Lochaline Quartz Sand Mine, on the Morvern Peninsula near Mull, after receiving reports of concern for a man at 12.25pm on Monday.
Crews attended and a man – understood to be a worker at the site – was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say enquiries into the fatality are ongoing. Bosses at the facility say they are working closely with the Police Scotland and the Mines Inspectorate to investigate his death.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and has said they are working with cops on the investigation.
A spokesperson for Lochaline Quartz Sand told STV News: “A serious incident occurred at Lochaline Quartz Sand Mine on October 21, 2024. As a result of the incident, a colleague tragically lost their life.
“Our deepest sympathies are with our colleague’s family, fellow employees, and the local mining community at this time. We are working closely with Police Scotland, the Mines Inspectorate and others to investigate this incident.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.25pm on Monday, October 21, we received a report of concern for a man at Lochaline. Emergency services attended, but the man was pronounced dead.
“His next of kin have been informed. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. Enquiries are ongoing.”
An HSE spokesperson said: “We are investigating this incident and liaising with Police Scotland.”
