Adams Township, Pa. (Gray News) – A charging cell phone that was “tucked into the cushions” of a couch sparked a house fire in Pennsylvania early Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

The Adams Area Fire District said firefighters arrived and found the fire “isolated” to a couch in a bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished.

Fire officials said the fire was caused by a charging cell phone wedged into the couch cushions and a blanket.

“We at the AAFD would like to strongly advise our residents to never charge any electronic devices such as cell phones, iPads, tablets, or computers on padded furniture or in bed with you, especially while sleeping,” the fire department said. “Charging devices on soft surfaces can trap the heat generated by the battery while charging and ignite mattresses, bedding, pillows, and sheets.”

The fire department said the National Fire Protection Association, Apple and Samsung all recommend charging devices on a “hard, flat, well-ventilated surface.”
