(Gray News) – Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón will announce his decision Thursday regarding the possible resentencing of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been in prison for decades in the killing of their parents.

The press conference will be held at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison for the killings of Jose and Kitty Menendez in 1989, but a Netflix series has reawakened discussion on whether the life sentence was justified.

Dozens of relatives on both sides of their family held a press conference in downtown Los Angeles on Oct. 16, the Associated Press reported.

The relatives said Lyle and Erik Menendez were “vilified” by the justice system and were victims of child abuse, including sexual abuse, at the hands of Jose Menendez, their father.

Joan Andersen VanderMolen, Kitty Menendez’s sister, said the wider family did not know about the extent of the abuse, the Associated Press reported.

“It became clear that their actions — while tragic — were the desperate response of two boys trying to survive the unspeakable cruel of their father,” the 92-year-old aunt said.
