Making a memorable entrance to the House of Lords, former Prime Minister Theresa May attempted a Scottish accent as she recounted an amusing tale about a Tory colleague.

During her maiden speech, she recalled her “mentor” Baroness Goldie had jestingly given her a copy of the Lords rulebook as a gift before she took her seat on the red benches last month. The chamber echoed with laughter as Lady May attempted to copy the voice of the ex-Scottish Conservative leader while revealing the humorous nature of the “present” intended for her reading during the conference recess.

Lady May, who has also been called “the Maybot” due to her stiff demeanour on stage, infamously danced onto the stage to the tunes of Abba’s “Dancing Queen” at the 2018 Tory party conference. Speaking in Parliament, the new peer said: “I stand here feeling the privilege of being in this place but also with a sense of trepidation.

“People outside of this House have said to me, ‘Don’t worry you were a member of Parliament for Maidenhead for 27 years. It will be all right. You know what the ropes are, you know the rules’.

“And I say no. This is a very different place. And when they say how, I say well, for a start, their lordships normally only speak when they know what they are talking about.

“I will endeavour to follow that rule in my contributions in this place.”
