Matty Healy, of The 1975, has expressed his disinterest in penning songs about the “casual romantic liaisons” for which he’s gained notoriety.
The 35 year old musician, who was speculated to have had a fleeting fling with Taylor Swift in 2023 following her split from Joe Alwyn, shared his thoughts on Joshua Citarella’s Doomscroll Podcast.
Swift, 34, is believed by fans to have alluded to her past with Alwyn and Healy, as well as her current relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce, in her latest album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’.
On the podcast, Healy remarked: “If I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me, or my casual romantic liaisons, or my, whatever it may be, that I’ve kind of become known for, just because I was famous. I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from. I’m just not interested in it.
“And I think that the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always fight against.” Healy also touched upon the relevance of personal experiences in music: “So the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is going to be like, two years old.”

He observed that others take this approach but found it unengaging: “I see people doing that as well, and it’s just not interesting,” he added.
Describing his musical ethos, Healy stated: “My work is, I hope, interesting art pop that provokes, that maybe helps popularise academic subjects that I’m really interested in.”
Fans have interpreted the opening track of Swift’s 2024 album, ‘Fortnight’, featuring Post Malone, as a nod to her rumoured dalliance with Healy.
In her lyrics, Swift declares “And I love you, it’s ruining my life, I touched you for only a fortnight” and chillingly adds, “Your wife waters flowers. I wanna kill her”.
While she doesn’t directly mention Healy, the album is peppered with tracks that seem to be nods towards him, such as “. While Swift never namechecks Healy, a number of other songs appear to reference him, including Guilty As Sin? on which she sings about having where she confesses having “fatal fantasies” about an old flame whilst tied down in another romance.
Last May, at the Nashville stop of Swift’s Eras tour, Healy surprised fans by joining indie songstress Phoebe Bridgers on stage, Bridgers being part of Swift’s support lineup. With a collection of chart-toppers like Girls, Chocolate, and The Sound under his belt, Healy is currently dating model Gabbriette.
