A nutritionist has suggested that a homemade smoothie, brimming with superfood ingredients, could help you shake off a cold in mere hours instead of the usual fortnight. As the season for sniffles descends, many will find themselves cocooned in blankets, trying to sleep away the common cold.

However, for those eager to bounce back faster and conquer the dreaded sniffles, nutritionist Toby King has shared his top smoothie recipe for a speedier recovery. Speaking to BunkBeds, Toby remarked: “No one likes having a cold, and while sleeping 8-10 hours is one of the best ways to recover from one, the nutrition we put in our bodies is equally as important.”

“The length of your cold can depend on your age and a variety of other factors including your nutrition. If you want to recover from a cold more quickly focus on consuming foods high in vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin A, B, C, D and Zinc. While you can supplement these, you can also get them from whole foods, one of the quickest ways to do so is a smoothie.”

For those sensing the onset of a cold or already in its grips, a smoothie offers a swift and simple method to consume calories and essential nutrients your body craves. Toby advises: “To beat your cold quicker you’re going to need the following:

  • 1/2 cup of orange juice
  • 1 apple
  • Fresh ginger
  • 1/2 Banana
  • 1/2 cup Greek yoghurt
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 cup of coconut water
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup of fresh spinach

“Blend all the ingredients and add more coconut water until you reach your desired consistency if needed. The smoothie is high in all the nutrients you need to fight a cold and the pinch of cayenne pepper will help you beat any congestion issues you may have.”

“It can take some people up to 2 weeks to recover from a cold, if you drink this smoothie daily you should recover in a few days.”
