An expert dog trainer has singled out three large breeds that he would never recommend, one of which he warns against keeping around children.

Garret Wing shared his advice on the American Standard K9 TikTok channel, which boasts 3.6 million followers, with a rundown of the “top three XL dog breeds we don’t recommend”.

In third place was the Tibetan Mastiff, which Garret called a “monster of a dog”. These canines can reach a weighty 68kg and stand tall at 26in. Garret said: “[It] is capable of killing an entire pack of wolves. So do you think you need that in your home with small children? Not necessarily.”

He also mentioned how Tibetan Mastiffs are notorious for their “very stubborn” nature, leading to training challenges. He said: “Beautiful animals, probably not for you.”

Garret placed the Great Dane at number two for its incredible size – they can grow up to 91kg in weight and measure 32in in height. Despite labelling them as “really sweet dogs” that could be “amazing pets”, Garret underscored that opting for a Great Dane means adapting every aspect of one’s life.

He said: “You have to basically rearrange your whole house, even when it comes getting a crate and taking them places. Where’s your coffee table, and where are you going to put your cup? We’re talking about a dog that is just too big for most homes.”

Finally, Garret said the “number one dog breed we do not recommend for families” was the Cane Corso. These dogs can reach around 50kg in weight and stand up to 28in tall.

Garret said: “That is too much dog for about 99.9% of folks. And that’s coming from us, not only as professional dog trainers, but owners of the Cane Corso. They are absolute battle tanks and you don’t need that in your suburban neighbourhood.”
