Antiques Road Trip saw tempers flare as experts Philip Serrell and Catherine Southon engaged in a heated dispute over how to make the biggest profit.

During a recent episode of the BBC show, the pair went on a treasure hunt in the Midlands, but their competitive spirits soon got the better of them.

As they arrived in Coleshill, Warwickshire, Philip advised Catherine to avoid buying expensive, high-risk items, but she took his comment as an attempt to undermine her, the Express reports.

She shot back: “So play it safe? Is that what you’re saying? Are you giving me top tips?

Philip quickly responded, “No, you can’t play it safe! ” The tension was palpable as they continued their journey in a 1970 Citroen DS20.

Despite the disagreement, it later became clear that Catherine might have benefited from heeding Philip’s advice. With £200 each to spend, they scoured antique shops for items to auction off in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Catherine’s purchases, including an amber necklace and vintage compacts, failed to pay off, leaving her with a loss of £172.30. Meanwhile, Philip’s buys, such as a rusty cabinet and a pair of stone dogs, earned him a tidy profit at auction.

Antiques expert Philip Serrell finished the day leading with a tidy sum of £259.94, boasting more than his competitor. The 70-year-old is famed for regular stints on BBC’s antiques programs like Bargain Hunt and Flog It!

As one of Bargain Hunt’s most enduring faces since 1999, he recently regaled BBC audiences with his most amusing on-set incident. Philip recalled: “I was demonstrating an Edwardian child’s swing and I hit the cameraman with it.

“He went down like a sack of potatoes. It wasn’t live but the camera was still running.”

He also admitted he doesn’t hesitate to inform contestants if their finds are “tacky”, candidly saying: “I’ve always told them! But it might well prove me wrong and not the contestant.”
