Coatbridge Citizens Advice (CAB) are launching a new project funded by Independence UK which is dedicated to supporting older people.
Research shows that the elderly are not claiming the benefits they may be entitled to, which is especially important for Pension Credit – an income-related benefit which can passport entitlement to other benefits such as the changes in the Winter Fuel payments, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction – as well as Attendance Allowance.
Many people don’t know how to claim these benefits, may feel they won’t be entitled or don’t want to fill in long claim forms and that’s where CAB come in.
The Coatbridge bureau have a dedicated adviser, Mhairi Robertson, who will provide that service as well as checking out other ways to maximise income, such as energy advice and support along with linking in with other organisations for particular help that a person aged 65-plus may need.
Mhairi will provide this service whatever way suits the client – by phone, face-to-face or home visits if required.

Coatbridge CAB manager Marian Tobin told Lanarkshire Live: “Given the recent changes to Winter Fuel Payments, where older people will no longer get payments they need due to high energy prices, along with the millions of unclaimed benefits, especially for older people, this project is a lifeline to people who may not think they will be entitled to benefits – or who think it’s charity and not for them.
“This isn’t the case as older people are entitled to these benefits, so let Mhairi help get you what you are entitled to.”
