Strictly Come Dancing’s Wynne Evans has come under fire for allegedly making an inappropriate joke while in the makeup chair.

Sources allege that the opera singer quipped his double chin resembled female genitalia, a comment he reportedly made prior to the BBC ballroom contest’s launch show. An insider remarked: “It was a bit of a vulgar dad joke.”

While no formal complaints were lodged, it seems some staff members were not amused. The insider continued: “Wynne clearly didn’t mean any offence, but you have to be a little bit careful these days.”

A person close to Wynne argued that the joke was self-deprecating and part of a private chat with a makeup artist, with at least one other individual present, and claimed the makeup artist took no offence.

This incident comes ahead of a public outcry over Wynne’s interaction with dance partner Katya Jones, where he was criticised for how he touched her during a routine, which she later dismissed as a harmless inside joke. Katya defended Wynne, stating: “The hand incident was a very silly inside joke between Wynne and I. So even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is complete nonsense. It’s actually absurd.

“So let’s focus on how brilliantly Wynne Evans is doing and what an amazing dancer he’s becoming.”

Wynne, famed for his role as the exuberant tenor in the Go Compare adverts, took to social media platform X to express that he and Katya are “really amazing friends,” explaining their high-five as a “running joke” between them. Ahead of this week’s Halloween-themed show, Wynne promised they would keep up the “slapstick” humour, saying: “I promise we will always be fun – we want to be fun for all the family. We want to bring a bit of slapstick comedy, and fun for the kids.”

He also shared his excitement about dressing up, something he’s never done before, to which Katya responded: “Well, you will for Strictly Halloween! We get to do some great fancy dress. This year might be my favourite.”
