Outlander’s definitive conclusion is still a mystery to almost everyone – including the cast and crew.

Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) adventure is expected to come to an end next year with its eighth and final season, after the next crop of season seven episodes wraps up the current chapter.

The upcoming eight outings pick up with the Frasers after setting sail to Scotland, while their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) is left stricken with worry while her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) heads back in time to rescue their abducted son.

As for the cast, they have officially wrapped up the eighth season, though Heughan confirms they’ll be heading back briefly for “pick ups” shortly.

While fans wait for the next entry in the Fraser saga to be unveiled, the cast recently sat down with producer Maril Davis at New York Comic Con to preview the final stretch of their Outlander journey.

During the panel, she revealed the final moments of the story are being kept under lock and key.

When the moderator probed her about how many people in the cast had seen the entire finale script, she confirmed: “Some people have seen it.

“But, Matt Roberts, our showrunner, purposefully didn’t want – and it wasn’t just the actors – he didn’t want everyone to get our normal distribution.

“So we did not put out the full script to everyone. Still, to this day, not everyone has seen it, we’re not telling people the ending.”

Davis then revealed that some key details about the final episode are still up in the air.

“He hasn’t decided the ending,” she said. “We purposefully are doing that because there are leaks.

“Not these people!” she added, assuring the cast that she trusts them not to reveal Outlander’s biggest secrets.

“But people talk. And we’re just trying to preserve it.”

Heughan then joked: “We’ll tell you, don’t worry”, prompting laughter amongst the panel. “They’ll tell you after,” Davis replied.

Although fans and much of the cast are still in the dark, someone who is in the know is the author of the original Outlander novels, Diana Gabaldon.

“We were very careful,” Davis adds. “We didn’t want to step on her toes. There is another book.

“So, we’re ending it the way we are, we just wanted to be respectful of not ending it the way she would.”

Readers still have the tenth book in the series coming down the pipeline but, before publishing day finally arrives, fans are preparing to say their farewells to Claire, Jamie and the rest of the clan.

Outlander season seven part two premieres on Friday, November 22, on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
