Kevin O’Hara feels Hamilton Accies need to be trigger happy if they are to fire themselves up the Championship table.

Seventh-place Accies are still licking their wounds from a 3-1 defeat at home to leaders Falkirk last week, in which they were 3-0 down inside 35 minutes, and they now welcome Morton today desperate to get back to winning ways.

Last season, hitman O’Hara was the play-off hero for the club as two wonder strikes from distance helped them see-off Inverness to win promotion.

And he feels if Accies start trying their luck with shots more often, that could pay off.

He said: “We are trying to walk the ball in the net at times and score the perfect goal, instead of actually getting the ball at their feet 25-30 yards out and seeing what happens.

“Even if it doesn’t go flying in the net, it might fall for us. Even against Falkirk, our goal comes from Oli Shaw having a good strike and the keeper spills it for Euan Henderson to score.

“I think we need to do that more often. If you don’t work the goalie, you are not going to score goals.

“We need to start working the opposition backline and goalkeeper more than we are right now.

“We are maybe choosing the wrong option at the moment. Maybe going ourselves when we can play a guy who is in a better position. That will help the team get more goals and more three points.

“Morton gave us a tough game in the cup the other week [with Ton winning 1-0 in the SPFL Trust Trophy] so we know they are a good side. They play good stuff as well so we will need to be wary of that.

“Consistency is key in any team and we need to start picking up results.”

O’Hara netted 20 goals last season but has just one league goal so far, so he hopes to add to his tally against Ton.

He added: “I have been asked to play a number of positions this season, so I’ve been on the wing a bit more than I have through the middle. I know my job defensively and the gaffer obviously puts a lot of trust in me to work hard defensively.

“But I need to get myself into more areas where I can score goals, like I did last season, and pull the trigger more often, instead of trying to find that extra pass.”
