When President-elect Donald Trump nominated then-retired Gen. John Kelly as his secretary of homeland security in 2016, he said that the 4-star Marine’s “decades of military service” made him “the ideal choice.” When in 2017 Trump named Kelly as his chief of staff, he called him “a great American and a great leader” who had done a “spectacular job” at DHS.
