The four-star Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Country Park welcomed some of Europe’s top basketball teams this week as international men and women’s teams arrived in Lanarkshire to take part in the FIBA Europe Cup and the Eurocup.

The teams were challenging the Caledonia Gladiators who are based at the nearby Playsport Arena in East Kilbride.

The Scottish women’s team took on Swiss team BCF Elfric Fridbourg, whilst the men’s team went head-to-head with JDA Bourgogne Dijon from France.

The four-star Alona Hotel was selected by the host team to accommodate the international players during their visit.

And the hotel is also set to welcome the men’s German team, MHS Riesen Ludwigsburgh on October 30 and the women’s team, Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomération from Lyon in France, on November 20 as they take on Caledonia Gladiators at the Playsport Arena.

Jensen Taylor Connelly, director at the Alona Hotel, said, “It’s exciting to see the athletes in the hotel, who are all just so phenomenally fit. Although the teams don’t get to see much of Lanarkshire as they are focused on preparing and training for their games, they hopefully receive a taste of our welcoming hospitality during their stay.

Tony McDaid, CEO of Caledonian Gladiators added: “It is fantastic to work with local partners and showcase the excellent businesses across Lanarkshire to our international guests. We look forward to working with the Alona Hotel over the next few weeks as they support us throughout the season.”

Some 40 men’s teams take part in the FIBA Europe Cup and 48 women’s teams participate in the Eurocup, both of which are contested throughout the basketball season which runs from September until May.
