Outlander fans are overwhelmed with emotion as the beloved historical romance series is finally coming to an end, after a rollercoaster love story for Claire and Jamie Fraser.

Caitriona Balfe, who stars as Claire Fraser in the hit Starz show, shared a snippet from behind the scenes of filming for its eighth and final season after it has amassed fans across the globe on the small screen.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling book, both Caitriona and Scottish star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, have captured the hearts of viewers with their nail-biting and epic time-travelling adventures.

Taking to Instagram, the Irish actress shared a video clip of having her ‘Claire wig’ removed for the final time in the dressing room, as she became visibly emotional and tearful – marking the end of an era for both the cast and fans.

The camera then panned around to Heughan, who gave a casual wave as he was sitting in hair and make-up. Fans took to the comments section as they shared their sadness, “How will I go on without Claire and Jamie?,” one fan wrote alongside a sad emoji.

One person humorously joked “Sing me a song of a wig that is gone..,” playing on a reference from the iconic opening ballad of the show.

Someone else gushed, “Instantly teared up! There is always worry when you find out that one of your favorite book series is going to be on screen. You can only hope that the actors they choose will do our beloved characters justice.

“I have never been so thankful for casting in my life! Thank you, Catriona, for bringing Claire to life on our screens. No one else could have done it better!”

Outlander fans devotingly followed the adventures of English nurse Claire Randall, who travels back in time from 1940s Scotland to the 18th century, where she meets and falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser.

The show has been filming in locations in Scotland since the first series, which premiered in 2014 on US network Starz. The first part of series seven aired earlier this year, with part two due to launch in November.

The drama’s showrunner, Matthew B Roberts, shared a photo of a plane passing through a cloudy sky to Instagram as he paid tribute to Scotland.

“As I say goodbye to Scotland, hopefully not for the last time, it feels like I’m leaving more than just a location,” he wrote.

“What started as a distant place across the world has become a home in the truest sense. From day one, the people of Scotland welcomed a small group of Sassenachs from Los Angeles with open arms. They didn’t just let us film here – they embraced us, shared their stunning landscapes and culture, and made us feel like we belonged.”
