Princeton physician inspires $40K scholarship donation to WVSOM(WVSOM)

PRINCETON, W.Va. – The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine said a couple donated money to the School that will help create scholarships for future students.

According to a press release, the couple was treated by Ryan Runyon, D.O., who is an alumnus of the School, and they decided to donate $40,000 to an endowment.

Runyon was a graduate of WVSOM‘s class of 2002, and went on to establish Princeton Family Medicine in 2006. Earlier this year, according to the WVSOM, someone whose husband is also a patient of Runyon’s came in for a physical exam. During the exam, Runyon determined the patient had atrial fibrillation, which is a common condition where the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly.

“They were grateful we tracked it down,” Runyon said. “But she was concerned because she’d just seen a specialist the day before and it wasn’t discovered. We found it by listening closely and making sure we went over the patient as a whole.”

Runyon and a heart specialist are co-managing the condition.

Several months after the diagnosis, the couple wanted to give to the medical school that taught Runyon, and decided to donate to the WVSOM Foundation, which is the fundraising part of WVSOM. This also allowed Runyon to create criteria for a scholarship.

WVSOM’s Executive Director of Foundation Relations, Donette Mizia, said the organization is adding the currently unnamed endowment with money from the estate of another donor, which will bring the endowment $50,000.

WVSOM said the couple who donated the money wish to remain anonymous.
