Edinburgh Zoo has welcomed a new red panda.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland revealed on Tuesday morning that a one-year-old female red panda has arrived at the Edinburgh attraction. Priya comes to the zoo from ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in England.

Priya was born at Whipsnade Zoo in 2023 to parents Nilo and Ruby. Her mother Ruby was previously born at Edinburgh Zoo in 2021 to parents Bruce and Ginger, who both still live at the zoo.

Priya will reside in the habitat behind Penguins Rock. Edinburgh Zoo is now home to five red pandas, with Priya joining Kevyn, Bruce and Ginger, and their new kit.

As previously reported by the Daily Record, Bruce and Ginger welcomed their little one earlier this year. The young female was born in July, with Edinburgh Zoo sharing adorable photographs of the youngster earlier in October.

According to Edinburgh Zoo, red pandas are endangered in the wild. The species face threats from poaching, as well as destruction of natural habitat as a result of deforestation.

Despite the name, red pandas share more similarities with racoons and weasels than giant pandas. The species is famous for its strong climbing skills, and visitors to Edinburgh Zoo will often find them up in trees.
