Rutherglen MP Michael Shanks has thanked the charities and organisations who contributed to his Preparing for Winter drop-in event at Rutherglen Town Hall.
The MP was aiming to address poor rates of Pension Credit take up in the constituency, and help ensure local residents are ready for the winter season.
It was attended by a number of organisations who will be supporting older people this winter, including LEAP, Money Matters, and Citizen’s Advice.
They were able to offer advice on claiming Pension Credit and other financial support. Advice on energy efficiency and protection against power cuts was also on offer from SP Energy Networks, and the brand-new Energy Advice Team at Healthy n Happy were able to offer simple tips to help improve energy efficiency at home.
It is thought that up to a third of eligible pensioners are not currently claiming Pension Credit. Those who qualify are automatically eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Thanks to the Pension Credit backdating rules, it is possible to apply and have the claim backdated by up to three months. The latest date to apply and still qualify for Winter Fuel Payment is December 21.
Michael Shanks MP said: “Although we’re all looking forward to Christmas, the winter season can be a worrying time as the weather starts to turn colder and energy bills start to rise. It’s really important that those who are eligible for extra support are able to claim.
“I’m grateful to all the charities and organisations who took the time to support residents in Rutherglen and offering advice. I know many constituents I spoke to at the event found their involvement really helpful, and new claims on pension credit and attendance allowance were made at the event.
“If you don’t think you’re eligible, or you’re not sure: there is no harm in double-checking.”
