Sorry Alfredo Morelos has spoken out for the first time since the news of his car crash in Colombia, thanking his club and teammates for their support.

It was reported last week that the former Rangers striker, now on loan at Atletico Nacional, had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after his car crashed into a motorbike having crossed lanes on the motorway to overtake a truck. Shocking photos and footage later emerged and Morelos is facing a fine of around £4000 plus community service, driving licence suspension and a potential compensation payout.

He’s set to find out on Friday whether he has a future at his club having not featured since the news broke. It’s also been reported that his lawyers are unhappy with the way authorities handled his breathalyser test and could push to have the legal case thrown out.

As the anxious wait goes on over his future, however, Morelos has spoken out for the first time. He wrote on X: “I want to share with you that, a few days ago, I was involved in a traffic accident while I was on my way to training. Although it was an unexpected and unfortunate situation, unfortunately, one person was injured. Since then, I have been committed to collaborating with his recovery and to offering all my disposition to the authorities so that the facts are clarified in a fair manner.

“I sincerely regret any inconvenience this incident has caused and could have caused to the club and my team mates. I deeply appreciate the support that they have given me and I regret having generated concern in those who trust my commitment. I am clear how much this shirt means to me and how much I value each team member.

“Thank you, fans, for your unconditional support. I remain focused and more committed than ever to defending these colours with dedication and passion. With the help of God and justice, I hope that all the details will soon be clarified. With love, Alfredo Morelos.”
