A man attacked his neighbour in Salsburgh after a row over a parking space.

Darren McGhee claimed he reacted after his son was threatened by the male.

McGhee, 51, appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court this week., where he admitted assaulting the man to his severe injury in the village’s Main Street on July 30 last year.

Annette Ward, prosecuting, said: “The victim heard shouting from the street and banging on his front door.

“He answered the door and saw McGhee, who punched him.

“The victim tried to defend himself by punching his neighbour in return and the two men ended up inside the property.

“The victim fell back on to the stairs and McGhee continued the assault by kicking him to the head.

“This went on for a minute or two before McGhee left.”

Police officers found “extensive” bloodstaining at the scene.

The victim’s nose was bleeding, his eye was bruised and closed, he had a swollen lip and he needed dental treatment.

McGhee was arrested and told police: “All this over a parking space. All this because he was giving it out to my boy, trying to act the big man. I went over there to defend myself.”

McGhee, who has no previous convictions, said he’d been drinking before confronting his neighbour.

Sheriff Scott Pattison deferred sentence until December for background reports.
