Emily in Paris is everyone’s favourite Netflix guilty pleasure, but the show may go through a series change as one actor has said he doesn’t like what’s happened to his character.
The actor in question was Lucas Bravo who plays Gabriel, Emily Cooper’s sexy downstairs neighbour who introduced her to French cuisine and helped her get out of a few sticky work situations.
The character was instantly likeable as a supportive and handsome French chef who didn’t really need a surname or do anything other than act as Emily’s love interest.
After appearing in the show since 2020 in this role, Lucas, 36, has admitted that he may not return to the series as he has ‘grown apart’ from the character and believes Gabriel has turned into ‘guacamole’.
Speaking to IndieWire he said: ‘The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take.
‘I’ve never been so far away from him.’
Lucas added that he now thinks that his character is ‘oblivious’ to everything that’s going on around him and was sad to see a character he loved turned to ‘guacamole’.
‘In Season 1, there was a lot of me in him. But as they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole.
‘I really grew apart from him,’ he said.
He explained that he cannot edit the way his character is portrayed: ‘I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set. We cannot change a word or an emotion. They know what they want and we just have to comply.’
He added that his contract ended after season four – which was released in full in September 2024 – and he is now uncertain if he wants to return for season five.
‘It makes me question if I want to be part of Season 5 […] because my contract ends at Season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self.
‘Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.’
This isn’t the first time the actor has spoken about his confusion when it comes to his iconic character.
In a September interview with SheKnows, the actor said: ‘I don’t really read what’s online, but reading the script this last season, it was like, ‘I don’t really like what it’s becoming and where this storyline is going.’
‘You know, at the end of the day, I’m just an actor, and I’m here to say my lines, but, yeah, it’s kind of weird.
He added: ‘I don’t understand him anymore. But we’ll see…Darren [ Darren Star the creator] has plans. I’m just following it.’
