Christmas in Newmains will shine a little brighter this year after a date for the big switch-on of the village’s festive lights was confirmed.

Over the past few weeks, a fundraising campaign has been kicked off with the aim to ensure Newmains kids enjoyed a Christmas lights event.

And it has now been confirmed that the big switch-on will take place on Tuesday, December 3, starting at 4pm with a variety of stalls to get locals into the festive mood.

The big switch-on will be held at 6pm with organisers hoping to have a “special guest” coming along to say hello to the boys and girls.

In a statement, the Newmains Community and Conference Centre stated: “Thanks to your incredible support we are well on the way to lighting up our living Christmas tree and birch trees this December.

“As of now we have £1380 in our GoFundMe account and with cash donations and leftover funds from the purchase and planting of the living tree we have raised around £2700.

“Although our initial plan for 100 per cent solar lighting was not feasible, we are moving forward with a hybrid model of traditional plug-in and solar lighting.

“This will ensure our trees shine brightly even on those dreary Scottish days. The lighting system we aim to purchase will cost around £2000 with additional annual expenses for PAT testing, installation, removal and utility bills.

“We are currently awaiting quotes to create a safe power supply to the area and will provide further updates once we have them.

“We also want to extend our gratitude to North Lanarkshire Council for the grant that enabled us to buy the living tree, to Craigmarloch Nursery and Caledonian Christmas Trees for their help with the purchase and planting and to The Orchard Project for their assistance with caring for the tree so far.”
