One of the foremost brass bands in Scotland is to perform at Newton Stewart Cinema on Saturday.
Kirkintilloch Brass Band was founded around 1990 with funds from a public subscription – and is still self-supporting with members mainly funding travel to concerts, contests and other events.
The band are five-time Scottish champions and represented Scotland at the European Brass Band Championships five times.
The talented group has also appeared at the British Open and the national championships.
The band is very active in teaching young players and has an active junior section.
Kirkintilloch is coming at the invitation of Creetown Silver Band, whose honorary president Stuart McNab started as a learner at Kirkintilloch.
He was with the band for about 30 years before moving to Galloway to teach at the Douglas Ewart High School.
Stuart joined Creetown Band and began conducting, which he has continued for 40 years until hanging up the baton this year.
Stuart, who is also honorary vice president at Kirkintilloch, said: “The conductor of the Kirkintilloch band is Hedley Benson.
“In his professional career he has been principal trumpet with the Porto Symphony Orchestra, Northern Ballet and co-principal with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has also turned out for orchestras around the world as a freelance player.”
Creetown Silver Band has a healthy junior section and is keen to encourage young people to take up and appreciate top quality brass band playing.
For that reason attendance at the 3pm concert is free to under 18s.
Tickets are £12 (conc £8) and available at The Cinema, from any Creetown Silver Band member or by contacting Stuart McNab at 07776378571.
